Serena Williams among former champions competing at Western & Southern Open

MASON, Ohio -- With just one month until the Western & Southern Open, we now know which players will compete in the WTA tournament.

The initial 39 players are from 21 nations. Eight players who have held the number one ranking and four former champions number among them, including Maria Sharapova (2011), Serena Williams (2014-15), Karolina Pliskova (2016) and Garbiñe Muguruza (2017).

Fifty-six total players, including as many as five wild cards and 12 athletes competing in a two-round qualifying tournament, will take part in the WTA Premier tournament.

The men’s field of competitors has not been announced.

The Western & Southern Open will run Aug. 11-19 at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason.
