'It's unbelievable' | Harrison small business bounced back from historic floods to host music festival

Jake's River Landing will welcome customers for a two-day music festival a week after floodwaters from the Whitewater River tossed their buildings into the woods.

HARRISON, Ohio — When we last visited Jake's River Landing in Harrison on Monday, their second bar was still sitting in the woods hundreds of feet from where it sat before the Whitewater River rose high over the property, leaving mud, tree trunks and debris strewn everywhere.

Friday, we visited again ahead of a planned two-day music festival along the river to find a very different picture.

"In one week, that we came this far, it's unbelievable," co-owner Hagit Limore Sunberg said.

The second bar and wedding gazebo were back in their rightful spots outside the woods, the tiki-style shades had been reinstalled, the bar was cleaned out with drinks ready to pour and a temporary fence had been erected around the stage, ready for the weekend's coming festival.

Sunberg said the floods would likely cost them six figures between lost revenue and rebuilding, but it was the help of others that allowed them to open quickly.

"We're here because of our friends," Sunberg said. "We're here because the community came together."

Sunberg said it also sent a message about their intent to stay in business.

"This coming weekend is our way of telling the community, we're resilient. This whole area got hit hard. You're not giving up. We're not giving up," Sunberg said.

Those interested in attending the weekend festival can buy tickets in advance through the Jakes River Landing website for $25 or $35 at the door.

With the river still high and flowing fast nearby, Sunberg said water recreation would be banned during the festival, but campgrounds would be available for reservation.
