WEST CHESTER, Ohio - It's been a week since Matt Stratman of Lakota West collapsed following a lacrosse game.

While Matt remains in a coma, a whole community has come together to raise funds for his family.

One of Matt’s lacrosse teammates came up with the idea for Saturday’s car wash, and it raised thousands of dollars raised in just a few hours. And the car wash showed that the community supporting Matt is much larger than one school district.

"It's amazing,” said Lakota West senior Matt Kauffung.  "I never expected this many people to show up. This many cars. This many volunteers."

For example, Dave Apgar drove all the way from North College Hill. He just knew he had to help the cause.

Jackson Kordos, a friend of Matt since second grade, said Matt is a “fighter.”

He'll keep fighting no matter what. We know he'll pull through," Kordos said.

Organizers said the car wash raised more than $13,000. Donations to the GoFundMe page set up for Matt’s family have more than doubled its goal.

"The whole community is here trying to raise them up … They've supported us throughout the years. They've been a blessing to us," Kauffung  said.
