READING, Ohio — Mount Notre Dame 2021 guard Laila Phelia announced Monday night she has verbally committed to play basketball at the University of Michigan.

Phelia, a first team all-Girls Greater Catholic League selection this past season, averaged 13.2 points, 4.5 rebounds, 1.8 steals and 1.1 assists for the undefeated Cougars (28-0) in 21 games. She shot 49.1 percent from the field including 39.5 percent from the 3-point line, according to the conference website.

MND was ranked No. 1 nationally in the Blue Star Media Elite 25 girls basketball rankings.

"Laila Phelia is one of the most versatile players in the state, having played a huge role in MND's magic season where they ranked No. 1 in the country by Blue Star Media," said Ohio Girls Basketball Report director Bryce McKey.

"Laila can score at all three levels and has mastered the mid-range game, which has mostly become a lost art. Laila is also one of the best rebounding guards I've seen in years. That coupled with her ability to defend will allow her to make an immediate impact for the Wolverines from Day 1."

The Cougars, winners of 44 consecutive games, finished the season ranked No. 3 nationally by ESPN and MaxPreps.

The Cougars (28-0) were scheduled to play Toledo Notre Dame Academy (24-3) in a Division I state semifinal game March 13 at St. John Arena. However, the Ohio High School Athletic Association suspended the remaining winter sports tournaments on March 12 due to the coronavirus outbreak. The OHSAA eventually canceled all remaining winter sports tournaments.
