FAIRBORN, Ohio -- The Ursuline volleyball team is the Division I state champion.

The Lions defeated Cleveland St. Joseph in three sets to win the state championship at Wright State University’s Nutter Center Saturday afternoon.

Ursuline, which defeated St. Joseph Sept. 24 in the regular season, finished its memorable journey with a 28-1 record.

Ursuline, ranked No. 2 nationally by the MaxPreps National Computer Rankings, is expected to host a pep rally for the state champion team at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the school, according to Athletic Director Diane Redmond.

It was the first state title for the Lions since 2012. Ursuline also won state volleyball titles in 2009, 2002, 1993 and 1975.

Ursuline continued a memorable weekend for Cincinnati-area teams in the state finals. Loveland, Indian Hill and Summit Country Day won state girls' soccer titles Friday in Columbus.
