GREEN TOWNSHIP, Ohio — La Salle High School standout wrestler Lucas Byrd announced his commitment to the University of Illinois Wednesday afternoon.

Byrd, recently named to the USA Today All-USA Wrestling Team, was the Division I state champion at 120 pounds this winter with a 46-1 record. He also won the Division I state title at 113 pounds as a junior.

He is the only two-time state wrestling champion in La Salle program history, according to La Salle Interim Athletic Director Jim Barre.

Byrd's 171 career wins in high school is second all-time in program history. Byrd is also a four-time state qualifier and state placer. He is a three-time district champion, three-time sectional champion and two-time Greater Catholic League wrestler of the year.

He has been ranked the No. 1 wrestler at 120 pounds by FloWrestling, Trackwrestling and Intermat.

Byrd had been committed to wrestle at Maryland but decided to open his recruiting because of a coaching change in late March. He also considered Penn State among his finalists.
