GREEN TOWNSHIP, Ohio — La Salle senior quarterback Zach Branam committed to the United States Naval Academy on Monday night, according to Lancers coach Pat McLaughlin.

Branam, the 2020 Division II state offensive player of the year, was named a Greater Catholic League South division player of the year with Elder junior Drew Ramsey and St. Xavier wide receiver Liam Clifford (Penn State signee).

Branam, who is 6 feet and 200 pounds, threw for 1,536 yards and 11 touchdowns and rushed for 1,395 yards and 19 touchdowns this past season.

He helped to lead the Lancers to the 2019 Division II state title as a junior. He threw for 1,676 yards and 21 touchdowns and rushed for 1,394 yards and 14 touchdowns as a junior.

“I am very proud of Zach,” McLaughlin said earlier in January. “He waited for an opportunity here at La Salle and took advantage of his opportunity when it was presented. He is a winner. As a quarterback, in my opinion, that is the best compliment someone can give.”

Branam made a commitment to Valparaiso earlier this month but ultimately changed his mind. The Naval Academy offered an opportunity to Branam on Jan. 20.

"He will play quarterback and be a direct admit to the academy," McLaughlin said.
