CINCINNATI — Fanendo Adi, one of FC Cincinnati's key forwards, was cited Sunday morning for operating a vehicle while impaired.

A statement from FC Cincinnati issued Tuesday said Adi was stopped for speeding before being cited.

"Per the MLS CBA, Fanendo will be assessed through Major League Soccer's Substance Abuse and Behavioral Health (SABH) Program," the statement reads. "He will be unavailable for all team activities until the assessment is complete and he has been cleared to return by SABH program doctors. In addition, MLS will undertake an independent review of the circumstances surrounding Fanendo's citation, working closely with the Ohio State Highway patrol."

The statement does not make clear how long the independent review may take, or how long FC Cincinnati could be without Adi.

The ban from play comes after Adi has been unavailable for play due to an ankle injury obtained during FC Cincinnati's home opener against Portland.
