Colts quarterback Philip Rivers retiring after 17-year career

INDIANAPOLIS — The search for a new starting quarterback is about to begin for the Indianapolis Colts.

Philip Rivers announced Thursday he will retire after spending his last season with the Colts, who he led to the playoffs with an 11-5 record. Rivers spent his first 16 seasons in the NFL with the Chargers in San Diego and Los Angeles.

"It's just time," he told the San Union-Tribune, which first reported his retirement. "It's just right."

Rivers finished his career by completing nearly 65% of his passes for 63,440 yards and 421 touchdowns.

In a statement, Rivers expressed his gratitude to those who helped him throughout his career.

"I am grateful to the Chargers for 16 seasons, and the Colts for the 17th season," he said. "Thank you to all my coaches that helped me grow as a player and person."

Colts owner Jim Irsay expressed his appreciation for Rivers' career in a statement provided by the team.

“Without question, Philip Rivers is one of the greatest, and no doubt one of the toughest, players to ever play this game," Irsay said. "For 16 years wearing Chargers blue, Philip gave the Colts fits, but he was a wonder to watch because of his skill at the quarterback position, as well as his undeniable love for the game.

"Even though he wore the Horseshoe for only one season, it was a season to remember, and we were fortunate to have his leadership and passion in our building for this part of our climb. We wish Philip the best in his retirement, and we will join fans in San Diego and Los Angeles in saluting him as a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame someday soon.”
