NEWPORT, Ky. — Two men were arrested Saturday night after a shot was fired near Newport on the Levee, and a stolen vehicle was crashed as the suspects attempted to flee the scene, the Newport Police Department said.

Police said officers received a report of a single gunshot fired in the 100 block of East Third Street. Officers found that the shot was fired into the air to likely cause public alarm, police said.

"Everyone started to panic a little bit, but immediately, I told everyone 'get down on the ground' and that was pretty much the end of it," said Treon Beck, bar supervisor at Shiners on the Levee.

There have been no reported injuries due to the gunshot, police said.

After the shot was fired, suspects in a black Ford Fusion attempted to flee westbound on East Third Street, but they crashed into three other vehicles stopped at a traffic light.

"All of a sudden we heard a big crash. Everyone turned to look down the street over here because people started yelling 'he's got a gun,'" said Beck.

After the crash, police said four men fled the vehicle and ran on foot. Officers pursued and detained two of the suspects who went into Newport on the Levee's garage.

Devonta Pettis, 18, and Jamal Fields, 20, both from Cincinnati, were charged with conspiracy to receive stolen property, possession of a stolen handgun and fleeing and evading police in the third degree. Both were booked at the Campbell County Detention Center.

Officers also found that the Ford Fusion involved was reported stolen from Cincinnati. In the vehicle, officers recovered a shell casing and a matching handgun, which was reported stolen from Covington.

Police did not give any information about the other two men who fled from the vehicle.
