LINCOLN HEIGHTS, Ohio — A 16-year-old girl was shot in Lincoln Heights Monday morning, according to the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office (HCSO).

HCSO said deputies responded to the 1300 block of Schumard Avenue around 4 a.m. for a juvenile who had been shot in the chest. The juvenile called 911 and was transported to Bethesda North Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The sheriff's office said a person of interest is in custody, but they have not identified them or said if charges have been filed.

After the shooting, we sat down with Valerie Bell, the teen's grandmother. She described what happened when she heard gunshots right outside her door.

"She coming in the house saying, 'I'm hit, I'm hit!'" Bell said.

Teenager shot in front of her home

On the front porch of Bell's home lies a pile of broken glass. The family said it was from the teen, Journie, who rushed to get inside when shots were fired.

"He pulled up in front of my driveway and shot my granddaughter in the chest," Bell said.

The teen allegedly got into an altercation with a man who had been driving the girl and her sister earlier that night, according to Bell.

"I thought she had just got grazed, because how it was on her chest, it looked like it just flew, but no," Bell said.

She said her granddaughter is now out of the hospital, but the bullet is still lodged in her chest.

"Only thing I could do was just pray for her and just tell her she's gonna be OK. It could have been worse, and I thank God that it wasn't, cause I don't think I could have took it. He didn't have to shoot her," Bell said.

Bell said her family has been affected by multiple tragedies, including the loss of her son, daughter and brother.

The grandmother said she spoke to her granddaughter just before our interview.

"She just said, 'Grandma, God blessed me.' And I just told her, Journie, we all gotta go, it wasn't your time," Bell said.
