CINCINNATI — One man is dead after a shooting at Fountain Square Friday night, Cincinnati police said.

In a press release, CPD said officers were dispatched to 5 Fountain Square Plaza for reports of a shooting.

Upon arrival, officers located a male victim with gunshot wounds. The Cincinnati Fire Department responded to the scene, began life-saving measures and transported the victim to UC Medical Center, where he was declared dead.

The victim was later identified as 25-year-old Darius Wheeler. Christopher Shipman, 36, was arrested for the murder.

Shipman appeared in court Saturday morning, where he claimed self-defense and that Wheeler initiated the altercation. His attorney said Shipman and Wheeler wrestled over a gun that Shipman legally possesses and pulled out during the altercation.
