HARRISON, Ohio - The Mason girls’ basketball team is district champions.

The Comets defeated McAuley 48-43 in a Division I district final Saturday night at Harrison.

Mason (23-2), which has won 12 consecutive games, advances to the regional semifinals March 2 and will play Huber Heights Wayne (25-1) at 8 p.m. at Kettering Fairmont. Wayne defeated Ursuline 51-34 earlier Saturday in another district final at Harrison. Wayne has won 24 consecutive games.

Mason senior forward Lauren Van Kleunen (Marquette signee) led the Comets with 20 points and 10 rebounds on Saturday. That was her seventh double-double of the season.

Senior forward Mariah Campbell had 10 points also for the Comets, which led in second-chance points 15-0. Mason is making its first regional tournament appearance since 2013.

"They are so unselfish," Mason coach Rob Matula said last week. "They recognize that they are all capable of playing. They are focused."

Sophomore guard Hallie Heidemann had 12 points to lead McAuley (18-7).
