SWITZERLAND COUNTY, Ind. -- Crews rescued 12 people from a van that had been stuck in floodwaters on Sunday, according to Sheriff Brian Morton.

The driver became stuck in high water at about 10:30 p.m. in the 4000 block of Nell Lee Road, Morton said. First responders rescued 12 people from the van. No injuries were reported.

“The Switzerland County Sheriff’s Office would like everyone to take this incident as a reminder to never drive into flooded areas,” Morton said in a statement.

The National Weather Service says a mere six inches of fast-moving flood water is enough to knock over a full-grown adult and that just one foot of rushing water can carry away a small car. Two feet of rushing water is forceful enough to float away almost any SUV or pickup truck.

Officials notified the Switzerland County Highway Department, and crews closed the road.
