CINCINNATI – Through it all, 5-year-old Brooklyn Smith keeps smiling.

But she’s fighting something scarier than any monster under the bed.

Brooklyn was diagnosed with DIPG, a type of brain tumor, just after her fifth birthday. It’s the same kind of cancer Lauren Hill had and to which she drew national attention.

She just underwent her first surgery at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, and she's still smiling.

Brooklyn’s uncle, Scott Smith, said the 5-year-old’s positivity is helping the whole family.

“We're doing well because Brooklyn's doing well,” he said. “Her courage and her smiles are what's giving everyone else the energy and the ability to get through this.”
