MURRAY, Ky. – More than 10,000 Kentuckians have registered to vote online or updated their registrations on GoVoteKy.com  in its first week, state officials say.

The popular new website is exceeding expectations, according to Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes’ office.

To register online, you must provide your Social Security number and date of birth. The information is encrypted and the site has safeguards that prevent people who are ineligible to vote from registering, Grimes' office says.

Criminal charges can be leveled against violators.

The deadline to register for the May 17 primary is April 18.
