Americans prepared to mark an unusual Memorial Day as the coronavirus pandemic ruled out traditional commemorations.

In New York City, honoring fallen military members will be done with car convoys and small ceremonies this year instead of parades.

Greece, meanwhile, sought to revive its crucial tourism sector by restoring ferry services to its popular Aegean islands.

Hard-hit Spain began to loosen virus restrictions in its biggest cities of Madrid and Barcelona, while Japan lifted its state of emergency for Tokyo and other areas.

U.S. authorities warned beachgoers to heed social-distancing rules in order to avoid any resurgence of the virus that has claimed nearly 100,000 American lives.
