ERLANGER, Ky. -- The driver of a FedEx tractor trailer was rescued after nearly two hours of being trapped upside down Thursday morning.

The driver was headed eastbound on Interstate 275 when he veered and struck another vehicle at about 6 a.m. at the Mineola Pike interchange, according to a spokesperson with the Boone County Sheriff’s Office. The other vehicle was an unoccupied 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer that was parked in the emergency lane.

Investigators said the truck went off the road, over an embankment and flipped onto its side. Investigators found the driver, an Indiana man, hanging upside down. First responders extricated the man after approximately one hour and 45 minutes. He was conscious at the scene and flown to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center.

Officials from the sheriff’s office said the cleanup from the crash is “extensive.” The fuel tanks need to be siphoned before the truck can be turned upright, according to a news release. One lane of I-275 reopened at about 8:30 a.m. More lanes will be reopened as the cleanup continues.
