HAMILTON COUNTY, Ohio — Republicans on Saturday appointed former Cincinnati city council member Charlie Winburn as the next Hamilton County treasurer. He is the first African-American in the county's history to fill the position.

“I am grateful and thankful to the Hamilton County Republican Party for giving me an opportunity to serve Hamilton County citizens,” Winburn said. “I am most appreciative to have received 202,000 votes from county residents. But be assured, I will serve every taxpayer and citizen of Hamilton County.”

Hamilton County GOP chairman Alex Triantafilou said his party made history on Saturday.

"Charlie Winburn ran a strong race for this seat and was prepared to become our next Treasurer," said Hamilton County GOP chairman Alex Triantafilou. "He is the right choice for our community. Charlie has the kind of experience we wanted and will be the perfect leader as that office goes through this transition."

Winburn will serve as county treasurer for six months, filling the unexpired term of Robert Goering, who was elected as a County Common Pleas Judge in November.
