SAVANNAH, Ga. -- Mark Hummeldorf, an Oak Hills High School graduate, Marine veteran and firefighter, died early Wednesday morning in a Savannah car crash.

"Mark was a great Marine, a better firefighter and one of the best dads I knew," wrote Savannah Professional Firefighters Association treasurer Tim Doherty.

Hummeldorf, 33, was struck by a driver who suddenly swerved into the oncoming lane, forcing his car into a third lane where another driver was struck. He died at a nearby hospital.

According to a GoFundMe established by the Savannah Professional Firefighters Association, he was the father of a 4-year-old son and expecting a baby girl with his wife.

"Back at the station, Mark was well-loved and respected," the GoFundMe page reads. "He had a great sense of humor that brought the laughter out in people, even on their bad days."
