The death of 19-year-old University of Dayton student Michael Currin has been ruled an accident, Montgomery County Coroner Kent Harshbarger announced Wednesday afternoon.

Currin, a Moeller High School graduate, died of a head injury on Sept. 21 after falling from the bed of a moving pickup the day before.

According to police, he had been walking from the University of Dayton campus to a nearby pizza restaurant early in the morning of Sept. 20. He accepted a ride from a passing pickup and opted to sit in the bed instead of the cabin.

Police said Currin fell from the bed about a mile into the journey, injuring his head. The pickup didn’t stop.

Another driver found Currin around 3:30 a.m. and call police. He was transported to Miami Valley Hospital, where he died the next day.

Although investigators initially explored the possibility Currin had been the victim of a hit-and-run, Harshbarger said he died of accidental blunt force injury to the head.

Members of the Moeller High School community described Currin as a kind-hearted young man, a well-liked member of the school's basketball team and a role model to his peers during his time at the school.
