MASON, Ohio -- The day before the Flying Pig, another marathon crosses the finish line.

Children participating in the incremental marathon will run 25 miles spread across several weeks. On the day before the Flying Pig, the children will run their final mile on the actual marathon course.

"It's pretty fun to do and it is pretty easy to do," Chase Cox said. "You just get on the ground and start running."

Chelsea Wirtz, a fifth-grade teacher in Mason, said they started doing the event with children about three years ago.

"I thought, 'What a great way to get the kids active and get them outside.' It is also a great way to get to know them outside of the classroom," she said.

Wirtz said the program offers many lessons outside the classroom.

"They learn the importance of a healthy, active lifestyle," she said. "They also learn sports do not have to be competitive. They can just get out there and have fun."

Fifth-grader Katrina Kassner said it's fun.

"It makes me feel like I got good exercise," she said.
