WEST CHESTER TWP., Ohio - A police officer punched while trying to take down a suspect has a Kroger shopper to thank for coming to his aid.

It happened in the West Chester store Sunday afternoon.

Police say 21-year-old Damien Anderson was trying to pass a fraudulent check at the Fifth Third Bank branch  inside when West Chester police officer Matthew Young approached. Anderson, 6-feet and 220 pounds, struck the officer several times in the head, police said.

A shopper, who did not want to be identified,  jumped in to help Young. Anderson was arrested on the scene, and Young escaped with minor injuries.

Anderson is locked up in the Butler County jail facing charges of assault, resisting arrest and forgery.
