HAMILTON, Ohio — Watch out, Butler County. There’s a new sheriff in town.

Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones made Naomi Short, an 8-year-old with brain cancer, an honorary deputy on Friday.

Her first order of business?

“Dad, you’re arrested,” Naomi said. “I’m taking you into custody.”

Naomi has Pineoblastoma, a series of tumors in her brain and spinal cord. According to her mother, doctors estimate the survival rate for her type of brain cancer around 30%.

Jones put Naomi in charge for the day and even gave her an ID card with her photo. Naomi said she even did the peace sign for her photo.

“It makes me feel really good,” Naomi said. “Because I’m only an 8-year-old little girl with cancer and I never thought that I could do this. I never thought that. And yesterday when I went to clinic I got my port and access and I didn’t cry at all.”

Naomi said the community and faith has helped her and her family.

“I’m planning on recovering with God because whenever I pray God always comes through and helps me and my family get through this,” Naomi said.
