HAMILTON, Ohio — Hamilton Police Sgt. Brian Robinson is taking action to make his community safer in the days following what was the worst mass shooting in U.S. history, when a gunman entered an Orlando gay club and opened fire, killing nearly 50 people.

For Robinson, the reality is that it’s only a matter of time before another incident like Sunday’s will happen again. And he wants to make sure his neighborhood is ready.

“Can’t be the ostrich and stick your head in the sand and pretend like it doesn’t exist,” he said. “Reality is that it’s out there now.”

That’s why he and his fellow officers in the department have invited community members to their training room next week, to learn about active shooter scenarios.

According to Robinson, those who encounter an active shooter have three options: Run. Hide. Fight. They should be considered in that order, Robinson said.

“The last scenario… that’s your last-ditch effort,” he said. “If you can’t hide, you don’t have an option. You fight. Not doing anything is what will most definitely , without a doubt… get you killed or injured.”

The Hamilton Police Department will hold an active shooter class Wednesday, June 22.
