FLORENCE, Ky. -- Boone County deputies will continue patrolling schools next school year, the sheriff's office and school officials announced Tuesday.

A school resource officer will be assigned to every public elementary school during the 2018-19 school year, the officials announced. They said it was "a permanent solution to the stop gap measure" they had previously put in place.

The sheriff's office was already provided armed security to middle and high schools in Boone County, but also began sending armed deputies to all public elementary schools in the county after the school shooting in Parkland, Florida last month.

"The existing plan has been met with great appreciation from our community," Superintendent Randy Poe said in a written statement.
