CINCINNATI -- Cincinnati Public School officials are looking for volunteers to help tutor elementary students in math.

University of Cincinnati student Samantha Branham started tutoring last year because she needed volunteer hours. She came back because of the new friends she made.

Branham plays games with Hays-Porter School students to make math fun, and she said she has fun too. Branham said she enjoys seeing the students fine-tune their math skills.

“I think they get more confident as the semester goes on,” Branham said. “They learn more of the material.”

Principal Nedria McClain said Hays-Porter has about 50 students in need of one-on-one help.

“We have a lot of kids who come to us with a variety of challenges and needs,” McClain said. “We try to address them in the classroom, but sometimes they need that individualized attention.”

McClain said tutors are needed 30 minutes a week, and the only requirement is to pass a background check.
