MIDDLETOWN, Ohio -- Middletown police say a man has died and his ex-wife is in custody after she admitted to shooting him in the head.

Anthony "Tony" Shearer, 45, had to be flown to Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton in critical condition after his ex-wife, Dawn Rachel Shearer, called 911 to tell dispatchers that she pulled the trigger around 8:30 p.m Monday. He died of his injuries at the hospital, according to Lt. Jim Cunningham.

"We were arguing," she told dispatchers. "I don't even know where I shot him."

When police arrived at the home in the 3600 block of Ellis Way, they found the man shot at least once in the couple's living room. Police recovered a handgun and other evidence from the scene. A news release said the couple "appeared to be involved in a domestic dispute prior to the shooting" and that police are working to determine the actual marriage status of the couple.

In the 911 call, Dawn Shearer said she and Tony were divorced and trying to reconcile.

"We were married for twenty-something years and we got divorced, then I moved back in to work things out," she said in the call.

Dawn Shearer was charged with murder and booked into the Middletown City Jail. The Montgomery County coroner will conduct the autopsy.
