CINCINNATI -- A bus passenger knocked out a man who sliced his arm with a box cutter Monday night, according to Cincinnati police.

Ricky Hales, 57, is charged with felonious assault. A prosecutor said Hales also was drunk at the time.

Police said Hales was harassing women on the Route 17 bus as it headed through College Hill. Another passenger stepped in to make Hales stop, police said, and that's when Hales cut him.

Hales' attorney claimed it was "mutual combat" and that Hales acted in self-defense.

Prosecutor Dave Wood said Hales was responsible.

"The defendant was so intoxicated when police arrived that they had to take him to University Hospital for treatment for his intoxication," Wood said.

Municipal Court Judge Gwen Bender set Hales' bond at $25,000 and ordered him to not ride any Metro bus while his case works its way through the courts.
