Most Americans will sleep through the extra hour delivered by the end of Daylight Saving Time. The overnight nurses at Bethesda North Hospital will work the same hour twice.

But it might be a little easier to get through their shifts this year, thanks to the surprise care packages delivered Saturday by Western Governors University.

“Why wouldn’t we give back to nurses?” said university chancellor K.L. Allen. “You think about COVID, you think about all the hard work they do. We want to be part of the community, and this is just a token of our appreciation for the hard work they do on a daily basis.”

The care packages included snacks, sleep masks and handwritten thank-you notes.

Chief nursing officer Becky Baute said she knew her staff would be touched by the gifts.

“(It’ll be great) just to be able to go into their break rooms and see a gift from the community, that the community understands and recognizes their time and expertise,” she said.
