Report: These are southwest Ohio's in-demand jobs

COLUMBUS — Workers seeking a job change, or anyone looking to enter the workforce may find a new state report beneficial in their search.

Hint: if you’re looking for a nursing job, you’re in luck.

The “In-Demand Regional Profile Report” from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services breaks down the top ten in-demand occupations based on the number of open positions, starting wages and education.

“These reports will help students and anyone interested in exploring new career paths make more informed decisions based upon opportunities in their area,” said ODJFS Director Kimberly Hall.

The report can be found at OhioMeansJobs.com, the state’s online jobs tool.

Nationally, the unemployment rate fell to 3.6% in April, the lowest level since December, 1969 — but Ohio’s unemployment rate was 4.4% in March, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Ohio ranked No. 41, tied with Illinois and Oregon.

Southwest Ohio is projected to have more than 12,000 annual in-demand job openings through 2024, according to the report released Friday. Anyone hoping to make a career change may want to pay extra close attention to these trends.

Top 10 in-demand jobs based on annual openings and starting wages:

  • Registered Nurses: 728 openings, $25.25
  • Customer Service Representatives: 477 openings, $11.07
  • Nursing Assistants: 467 openings, $10.76
  • Office Clerks, General: 313 openings, $10.37
  • General and Operations Managers: 298 openings, $26.69
  • Accountants and Auditors: 260 openings, $22.10
  • Licensed Practical and Licensed Vocational Nurses: 254 openings, $16.66
  • Maintenance and Repair Workers, General: 241 openings, $12.62
  • Sales Representatives, Services, All Other: 209 openings, $15.95
  • FL Sup/Mgrs of Food Prep. & Serving Workers: 200 openings, $10.73

The report also ranks the top in-demand jobs in southwest Ohio by education level. Below is a sample of the top-ranked occupations based on education, annual openings and starting wages.

Less than high school:

  • Construction Laborers: 155 openings, $13.94
  • Helpers-Production Workers: 74 openings, $9.70
  • Industrial Truck and Tractor Operators: 69 openings, $12.07

High school diploma or equivalent:

  • Customer Service Representatives: 477 openings, $11.07
  • Office Clerks, General: 313 openings, $10.37
  • Maintenance and Repair Workers, General: 241 openings, $12.62

Certificate, some college:

  • Nursing Assistants: 467 openings, $10.76
  • Licensed Practical and Licensed Vocational Nurses: 254 openings, $16.66
  • Truck Drivers, Heavy and Tractor-Trailer: 185 openings, $15.85
