TUSKEGEE, Ala. — A woman from Cincinnati died after collapsing on campus at Tuskegee University in Alabama, according to a statement from the school president.

Nyra Shaw-Hemphill, a sophomore student from Cincinnati, was transported to East Alabama Medical Center and died Thursday, President Lily D. McNair said in a statement Friday. The cause of death is unknown.

Shaw-Hemphill was majoring in animal, poultry and veterinary science.

“Counselors from the university’s Wellness Center have been and will remain in contact with Nyra’s roommates and other residents of the North Commons Apartments where she resided,” McNair said.

A moment of silence was held across campus at noon Friday in Shaw-Hemphill’s memory. Another moment of silence will be observed on Sunday at the university’s worship service at 9:30 a.m. Chapel staff also plan to hold a memorial service for Shaw-Hemphill on Oct. 9 at noon.

“We will announce funeral arrangements when they have been provided by Nyra’s family. In the meantime, and in the days and weeks that follow, I ask you to please continue to keep her family and friends in your thoughts and prayers,” McNair said.
