Hoopsters take high rankings, hopes into tourney

CINCINNATI -- Wilmington, Elder and Moeller are in the top five of the season’s final Associated Press Division I state boys’ basketball poll.

Wilmington (21-1), ranked No. 3 in the poll, plays Harrison (7-15) in a Division I sectional game at 5 p.m. Saturday at Fairfield. Wilmington is led by Mr. Basketball candidate Jarron Cumberland, a University of Cincinnati signee, who scored a single-game school record 52 points last week against Washington Court House.

Elder (19-3), ranked No. 4, plays Edgewood (6-16) at 6 p.m. Saturday at Lakota West.

Moeller (19-3), ranked No. 5, plays Sycamore (5-17) at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Hamilton. The Crusaders knocked off LaSalle Fridayto share the GCL South title with LaSalle and Elder.

In Division III, Purcell Marian (18-3) is ranked No. 3. The Cavaliers have won consecutive games and open the sectional tournament at 7 p.m. Friday against Riverview East at Loveland.

The AP poll is voted upon by media members around Ohio and is based on the regular season only.

The season’s final state girls’ poll will be released Tuesday.
