GREEN TOWNSHIP, Ohio -- Even the coach can't get over what's happening with his team this year.

La Salle High School's wrestling team is one of just eight still standing for a dual state championship in Division I.

"It's pretty incredible," head coach Avery Zerkle said.

The Lancers got where they are by defeating fellow Greater Catholic League teams Elder and Moeller in one night.

"It was great to finally beat the GCL teams, and two of them in one night. It was just awesome" senior wrestler Corey Shie said.

La Salle will head to Columbus Sunday to try to win a dual state championship. They're wrestle for a GCL championship a week later. And the Lancers already beat the No. 3 team in the country up in Cleveland this year.

Some of those helping propel the team include Lucas Byrd at 106, a sophomore who already was a qualifier for the state tournament last year, and senior Eric Beck at 145, who helped ruin senior night at Lakewood St. Edward.

"It was incredible," Beck said. "We were all shocked. I mean, we went out there with high expectations, and we got it all done. We were really happy."

All this has been happening under the direction of Zerkle, who set out specific goals for the team at the start of the year.

"One of them is to win a GCL title," he said. "We've got to try to beat Elder again, and St. X and Moeller all in the same day."
