Late CovCath rally falls short

LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Covington Catholic scored nine unanswered points in the fourth quarter but fell one short, 15-14 to Lexington Catholic on Friday.

The Colonels trailed by 10 entering the final stanza but made it a one-score game on a 27-yard field goal by junior Matthew Kloska with 4:24 remaining, making it 15-8.

Kloska had also hit from 41 yards out earlier in the game, and CovCath recorded a safety for its first points of the game.

Sophomore quarterback A.J. Mayer ran in a one-yard TD in the final minute, but the ensuing conversion pass fell incomplete.

Mayer finished 15 of 35 for 147 yards and one interception, and he rushed for 56 yards and one score. Sophomore Grant Dyer led the team in ground yards with 58.

The Colonels’ junior Brent Angel was the game’s leader in receiving yards with 80.

CovCath will travel to Beechwood next Friday.
