Fenwick tops Badin to stay perfect

Posted

HAMILTON, Ohio -- The two remaining unbeaten teams in the GCL Co-Ed Division faced off on Friday night, ending with Fenwick defeating Badin, 38-31 to keep its perfect season alive.

Fenwick’s Nathan Jeffers got the scoring started early, on a short 3-yard touchdown run to put the Falcons up early in the first quarter.

Badin responded by driving down to the Fenwick 5-yard line but was stopped short of a touchdown, resulting in a 22-yard field goal Logan Heintzman, allowing the Rams to get within 3 points of the Falcons in the second quarter.

After Fenwick was forced to punt, the Rams capped off their ensuing drive with a 14-yard touchdown pass to Philip Dozier from Zach Larkin. The touchdown was only the second touchdown Fenwick had given up all season.

Nathan Jeffers responded with a 49-yard touchdown reception from Fenwick quarterback Jimmy Gephart to put the Falcons up 12-10, but a successful 2-point conversion sent the score to 14-10 in favor of the Falcons.

On the next Rams’ possession, Cody Boxrucker broke free for a 25-yard touchdown on a draw play, giving Badin the lead back in the back-and-forth game.

A field goal by Fenwick’s Matthew Hirko with less than a minute to go in the first half tied the score at 17 going into the locker room.

Fenwick once again got the scoring started in the second half on a Jeffers 10-yard touchdown run, his third of the night.

Badin responded once again with another touchdown score on a Buxrucker 12-yard run to tie the score at the end of the third quarter at 24.

The fourth quarter saw Jeffers score his fourth and fifth touchdowns of the night, a 1-yard run and 41-yard run, respectively.

A late Badin touchdown pass from Larkin to Dozier cut the final deficit to 7, giving Badin its first loss in the loss column in 2015.

Fenwick (5-0, 2-0 in GCL Co-Ed) will host McNicholas next Friday night, while Badin (4-1, 1-1 in GCL Co-Ed) will travel to take on Carroll.
