LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Bowling Green came away with their first state championship Sunday after 17 state tournament appearances.

The Purples defeated Cooper 67-56 in the 100th Whitaker Bank/KHSAA Boys’ Sweet Sixteen championship game before 11,346 fans at Rupp Arena, The Lexington Herald Leader reported.

Terry Taylor had 16 points and 10 rebounds in Bowling Green’s fourth straight trip to state.

Cooper’s Sean McNeil had a game-high 20 points and six rebounds.

Bowling Green led for much of the second half before Cooper shortened their lead to five points with 5:57 to go, but the Purples ended their rally with a 15-3 run.
