HARRISON, Ohio – Anderson defensive back Jordan Burman put the exclamation point on the Redskins’ 45-3 win at Harrison Friday night.
Burman capped off his fourth-quarter interception by running to the Anderson sideline and slam-dunking the football into a metal garbage can.
A 15-yard penalty wasn’t going to make any difference. The Redskins' win was a slam dunk.
Anderson (3-0) had too many weapons for Harrison (2-1). QB Jay Volpenhein threw for five touchdowns and 425 yards and gave credit to the defense.
“I think we can credit this win tonight to the defense,” said Volpenhein. “The first drive of the game they stopped them deep in the their territory. We made it into points and from there the game got rolling.”
The Redskins defense was very impressive led by linemen Jake Campbell, Trent Rogers and Nate Crawford. Linebackers Beau Arlinghaus and Kyle Riley also made significant contributions.
But Volpenhein made the biggest. He was 21-for-35 passing and spread the ball around, hitting four different receivers for TD’s.
“You talk about throwing to different guys, it’s all about trust and I trust every guy on this team to make plays,” Volpenhein said. “I know everyone has my back and I have theirs. That’s what makes this thing work.”
Harrison took the opening kickoff and went on a slow, deliberate march down the field - a 17-play drive thanks mostly to the passing connection of the Young brothers. Senior quarterback Frankie connected with sophomore wide receiver C.J. on a pair of completions, one on third down and the other fourth down, to keep the drive alive.
But the Anderson defense was able to get a stop on fourth-down and short deep in its own territory, turning the ball over to the high powered Redskins offense on downs.
The Redskins needed just 72 seconds on the game clock to go 96 yards for the game’s first score. Volpenhein’s 34-yard pass play to Amadez Jones set up a 3-yard run by Kyle Blaha.
The Anderson defense stopped Harrison on three and out and Volpenhein took advantage with a 26-yard scoring strike to Kevin Shearer.
Volpenhein added a 71-yard pass, catch and run to Jones and only needed 38 seconds to execute the two-minute drill, finishing with a 35-yard scoring play to Austin Watt.
Anderson, which outgained Harrison in total offense 473-168, activated the running clock when Willie Johnson’s 33-yard field made the score 31-0 in the third quarter.
Jones and Joey Newton each caught fourth-quarter touchdown passes to put the game out of reach.
Harrison’s only score came on a 39-yard field goal by Kyle Farsing.
