California startup Cabin hopes to replace airplanes with double-decker sleeping buses

Posted

Traveling long distances usually means sacrificing sleep or your budget, but a California startup is going low-tech to solve this modern-world quandary.

Cabin is an overnight double-decker bus outfitted with sleeping “pods” designed for people who love traveling but hate its pitfalls. It’s currently only plying routes between Los Angeles and San Francisco, but they have an online form for you to suggest future route additions.

NPR reporter Aarti Shahani gave the service a try, leaving Los Angeles on a Sunday night to arrive for work in Northern California by 8 a.m. Monday, “feeling well-rested, not a train wreck.”

Jeff Kateman, a passenger Shahani encountered on the trip, said there was more than enough room in the compact pod even for his 6-foot-tall frame.

Cabin’s routes start at $115. Find more on their website here.
