SPRINGFIELD, Ohio -- Lindsey Marsh was 30 weeks pregnant Thursday night when her boyfriend shot her in the side of the head, according to Springfield police and the Dayton Daily News.
She died at Miami Valley Hospital. However, an emergency Caesarean section saved the life of her unborn child.
Marsh's boyfriend, 25-year-old Travis Hypes, claimed to police they had been in an argument that evolved into a shoving match. He said he pulled out a pistol at one point in the altercation and it fired by accident when Marsh shoved him again.
The baby, whose sex has not been disclosed, is receiving care at Miami Valley Hospital, according to police records.
Prematurely delivered babies face a greater risk of short-term medical complications and long-term disability than full-term babies, according to the March of Dimes and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
However, more than 90 percent of babies born at or after the 30-week mark will survive to celebrate their first birthday.
