A man hunting for arrowheads in central Ohio stumbled upon 900-year-old human bones, according to Coshocton County officials.

Detectives and the county coroner responded to a 911 call on June 21 and confirmed the bones were human remains, CNN reported.

The finding initially launched a criminal investigation. Officials extracted the bones, studied the remains and determined the bones were of historical interest.

John Krownapple, who lives near where the remains were found, toldCNN affiliate WJW-TV he was surprised no one had found the bones sooner.

Local experts said the bones could be from Native American tribes like the Hopewell or the Delaware.

Officials said the investigation is ongoing.
