COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- A Cincinnati appeals court judge has announced he's running for an open seat on the Ohio Supreme Court next year.

Republican Pat DeWine sits on the 1st Ohio District Court of Appeals and is a former Hamilton County trial judge and private attorney. He is the son of Attorney General Mike DeWine.

The 47-year-old DeWine announced his candidacy Monday for one of two open Supreme Court seats next year.

DeWine is also a former Cincinnati city councilman and Hamilton County commissioner.

Ohio Democratic Party Chairman David Pepper says the party is talking with several strong candidates.

Two seats on the court are open with justices Paul Pfeifer and Judith Lanzinger retiring because of mandatory age limits.
