Funeral costs covered for girls killed in fire

OWENTON, Ky. – A local funeral home will cover the funeral costs for two little girls killed in a fire Saturday.

The McDonald & New Funeral Home will make sure there is no cost to the family of the girls, age 2 and 4, co-owner Bryan New said.

“It’s completely cost-free to the family, and any money we get, we will put it in their hands… We’re not in the business of burying children,” New said. “We’re just here to help them get through this.”

The fire broke out around 9:45 a.m. Saturday, according to Kentucky State Police. Neighbors banged on the side of the mobile home and woke Samuel Yager, who escaped out a window. When Yager realized the girls, Aleecia and Abby, were still inside, he went back to try to rescue them, but the smoke was too thick.

New said the funeral home would also collect money to help the family get back on their feet after their home was destroyed in the fire. Additionally, a relative started an online fundraiser for the family.

“I can’t imagine a community as small as this wouldn’t pull together and help out,” Kentucky State Police Trooper Josh Lawson said.

The cause of the fire was still under investigation Sunday.
