Police: Hillsboro man dies in motorcycle crash after fleeing traffic stop

VEVAY, Ind. — A Hillsboro man died in a motorcycle crash Tuesday night after police attempted to stop him in Vevay, Indiana State Police said Wednesday.

The Switzerland County Sheriff’s Office received a call for a possible intoxicated motorcyclist seen leaving Belterra Casino around 9 p.m. Officers found the motorcyclist heading westbound on IN-156 and attempted to make a traffic stop.

Police said the motorcyclist fled from officers, who soon lost sight of him. Police later found the motorcycle crashed on State Road 56 near Green Valley Road. The man was thrown from the motorcycle, and officers tried to give him first aid.

The man died at the scene and has been identified as 53-year-old Richard Alan Owens of Hillsboro.

The Indiana State Police-Versailles Crash Reconstruction Team is investigating the crash, and toxicology results are pending at this time.
