GREENSBURG, Ind. -- Deputies arrested a former state police officer Thursday on charges of sex crimes involving a minor.

Jack R. Hewitt, 54, is facing charges of sexual battery and sexual misconduct with a minor, Indiana State Police announced.

A law enforcement officer notified state police of the allegations against Hewitt on Aug. 9, according to the announcement. Hewitt was immediately placed on paid administrative leave pending an investigation.

Hewitt resigned from the state police Thursday, state police said. He was arrested at the Decatur County Sheriff's Office Thursday afternoon. He was being held in the Decatur County Jail.

Hewitt began working for the Indiana State Police in 1998 and did not have any prior disciplinary history with the state police, according to the announcement. He most recently worked at the Versailles post.
