MILAN, Ind. -- A 4-year-old boy is expected to recover after he shot himself Thursday night.

The child found a loaded firearm in a home in the 1,000 block of South County Road 625 in rural Ripley County, and fired it, hitting himself in the abdomen, Indiana State Police said in a news release.

Family members rendered first aid and took the boy to Dearborn County Hospital, according to state police. He was transferred to Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center for further treatment.

The boy's injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, state police said.

Detectives are continuing to investigate the case. When they're done, they will present the case to the Ripley County Prosecutor's Office for review, state police said.
