Nearly half of all the kids in the city of Cincinnati – 47 percent – live below the federal poverty line. That's more than 30,000 children.

In the Tri-State region, one in five kids – 105,000 children – live below the federal poverty level.

Cincinnati's childhood poverty rate is more than double the national rate.

Those are the latest estimates from the Census Bureau, released in December, and they showed the problem here is getting worse instead of better.

Sometimes it seems like the hole we need to dig out of is just getting deeper.
