Many roads and attractions in the popular tourist destination of Gatlinburg, Tennessee, were closed on Thursday as flash flooding caused the Cliff Branch River to overflow into the city.

Video posted on Twitter on Thursday showed the water spilling onto roads and walkways. Water gauges around Gatlinburg showed local rivers above flood stage for much of the day on Thursday after heavy rains fell in the area.

Emergency shelters were open in Gatlinburg. Several roads and parking garages remained closed during the evening.
