We've done it again, America: We're setting a spending record.

For Halloween this year, spending is projected by the National Retail Federation to be $9.1 billion. And seven in 10 people will celebrate the holiday.

That's a lot of candy and decorations and costumes. In fact, we're spending $700 million more than we did in 2016.

Americans clearly love this October holiday, which this year falls on a Tuesday. The NRF says the expected most-popular costume for children will be an action hero or superhero, and for adults ... a witch.

Pet costumes are also a part of Halloween consumer spending, with a pumpkin being the most popular pick for them.

Most of what gets spent this year will go to costumes, followed by candy and then decorations. But after that? Americans like to give or send greeting cards for Halloween, the NRF says; $4 billion worth.
