FORT MITCHELL, Ky. --  He had infectious energy and a love for football.

Colson Machlitt, a Dixie Heights grad and Georgetown College football player, died Monday after he hit his head trying to  jump from a third-floor stairwell to a second-floor landing at a fraternity party, according to Lex 18.

The Georgetown sophomore died from a brain injury.

Friends and family celebrated his life and legacy Sunday evening at Dixie Heights High School.

"He was always--always going hard, always going after me, always making my job hard because he was a very good football player, and he was a very determined person," said Georgetown offensive tackle Nick Kathman.

Adam Wagner, Machlitt’s teammate, said the tragedy has pulled the Northern Kentucky community together.

"We're hurt right now,” Wagner said. “But we're going to be stronger because of it for the season having him up there."

Machlitt’s jersey was presented to his family.

His funeral mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Church in Crescent Springs.
